Windows requests to run on GNU/Linux

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on December 30th, 2007

We have a few products which will allow Windows requests to run on GNU/Linux, everything with changeable degrees of accomplishment. In spite of which products are on market, they will fall in to 2 groups: those which need you to possess a licensed replica of Windows, and those which do not require them. Win4Lin & VMware shape into first group, which I lovingly give it a name “virtual machine-type” functions. A second group is where products like Cross over Office, Wine and Cedega fall. These do not need Windows; somewhat they effort to trick Windows applications into thinking they’re running on Windows by performing varying forms of tricks at a twofold level. I name this class of function “windows emulators” (quite incorrectly, I confess).

It is good to evaluate apples and apples &so this editorial is a judgment of the two fundamental machine-type functions Win4Lin 2.7 and VMware Workstation 5.5.1. A test stresses desktop GNU/Linux and test platform is rightfully influential Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop having 512MB RAM, 30GB hard drive, 2.2GHz processor which runs Kubuntu Breezy Badger 5.10 which has kernel 2.6.12-10-386.

Overview

While it is necessary to make a note of that the two VMware and Win4lin are both practical machine-kind functions able of running Windows on GNU/Linux box, they vary in the degree of their purpose. Win4Lin Pro is exclusively intended to run  mono duplicate of Windows while VMware Workstation is intended to give many practical machines, every of which know how to run a duplicate of Windows, Solaris x86, NetWare and Linux. This comprehensive purpose is imitated in value & downloads extent. There are few products which will allow Windows functions to work on GNU/Linux, all with diverging degrees of achievements. Despite of which products are on advertise, they will drop into 2 groups: those which need you to have an approved facsimile of Windows, and those which do not need one. VMware and Win4Lin fit into primary group, which I demonstratively name it “virtual machine-type” functions. 2nd group is where products like CrossOver Office, Wine and Cedega fall. These products do not need Windows, somewhat they effort to trick Windows applications into ideas they are working on Windows by presenting different  types of actions at priary level. I name this class of function “windows emulators” .

Functionality

I was really astonished  and surprised to know that none of the products prop up 2 USB memory sticks which I frequently utilize on both of my Linux and Windows sytems. None of my 256MB Sony Micro Vault  and my Kasercorp 2.2GB Jumbo Drive are noticed by either of my VMware and  Win4Lin in spite of the truth that both of the devices are USB 2.0-compliant. I tried to hot plug the drives as the Windows visitor was working plus inserting the drives earlier than initiating the guest computers. The drives remained silent. Win4Lin mechanically generates a “HOME on host” split folder on guest Windows’ desktop which shows the present user’s home address list.

OSS AND LINUX

Posted in News, Product Review by admin on December 28th, 2007

Open Source Software started low in the year 2003 as SCO started 3 billion dollars court case in opposition to IBM. Its court case exposes legal worries on models of open source licensing, and also the development process of the company.

SCO’s true complaint was relied on intellectual property but not copyright. The company said that IBM integrated SCO business secrets hooked on Linux, revolving it into Unix-killer. A user who has at least a single application installed on Linux, the issue concerning how to swear themselves that developers who put into OSS didn’t take an account of some others’  intellectual property.

Even though it looks portentous, some people in industry seem to imagine that this court case has profit. Mostly, our readers prove to be captivating wait-and-see approach. 85 % of respondents to fresh Network Computing Asia Tech Review (2003) review that utilize OSS, have not closed organizing fresh Linux systems due to this court case, and a very few percentage of people are captivating an additional step of abolishing it.

In surplus to, Gartner Group advises that users should not reveal particulars on Linux deployments’, should not allow SCO to review your grounds’, and should not compensate SCO licensing fee unless the legal decision stresses it’.

Controlling the desktop:

Governments all around world inspected the likelihood of organizing Linux on desktop in 2003, & Thai government showed to be an effectual tool for discussing desktop OS costs. Microsoft reduced price of Windows XP so down in order to unite Thai government’s People’s PC project.

The waters are being tested by the corporations too. This is observed by truth that nearly 35 % of readers are using Linux substitute for windows on majority of desktop PCs. Fundamentally this tendency in 2003 were discharges of unwavering and Asian language-accomplished OSS descriptions of minimum utilities like  Microsoft well-matched OpenOffice and Mozilla browser suite and e-mail.

In addition to these, free Ximian Desktop of Novell adjoins calendar, task list management contacts and scheduling. Ximian ‘Connector’ permits users to support as complete Microsoft Exchange customers.

Last December Sun published the complete Java Linux Desktop. A technology licensing conformity is signatured by them with the assemblage of companies held by Chinese government which can look at this technology employed on billions of desktops soon.

Linux Powerhouse (new):

Novell carriedon to re-create by itself in 2003, obtaining famous Linux company Ximian, with their Exchange Connector, Desktop and Red Carpet software allocation products.

Novell will persist to hold Ximian-led MONO scheme, OSS execution of Microsoft .NET expansion Framework.

Supported by a venture from IBM in november, Novell publicized the attainment of SuSE Linux. Fascinatingly, as previous possessor of Unix, Novell is gossiped to have sufficient legal defense left to evade SCO problems.

Now this will surely be a last nail in the tomb for  UnitedLinux association, as SuSE will never require SCO and TurboLinux. As an alternative, Novell/SuSE will quickly set free their venture well-informed worldwide system to fight with Red Hat.

Vixta – finicky theory botched to impress

Posted in News, Product Review by admin on December 27th, 2007

Linux users who adore the gaze and sense of Windows Vista would love to have ‘Vixta’ – the new Fedora based distro. With Vixta, you get fresh widgets with a traditional KDE supported interface. Like Windows Vista, ‘Vixta’ also has task bar and start menu with user-friendly and eye-catching features.

The menu system in Vixta apps may be similar to that of Windows, but all the programs behind the scene are Linux equivalents. So, you have Konqueror as a substitute of Internet Explorer and Openoffice as a replacement for Office. Vixta comes with an installable live CD which is available in Portuguese as well as English. The verbose boot output and the plain boot screen of the live CD is not that much exciting, but the splash screen in the middle of the boot process somehow makes up for the remaining output.

Vixta’s kernel was piled up to set aside space, but it does not comprise the modules required by current gears to trigger CPU scaling. Vixta has a system updater and software manager which may have shipshape edges with Fedora repositories arrangement. The menu comes with two panes – one on the right which contains menu headings and the other on the left exhibits the applications accessible beneath each heading.

Unfortunately, there were not loads of functions in the menu except modest KDE apps. But, there are numerous useful system settings and tools given in the menu. Sound card configuration is one of the impressive tools as Vixta detects almost every sound chip automatically.

openSUSE 10.3 – excellent live performance

Posted in News, Product Review by admin on December 26th, 2007

‘openSUSE’ is a rock-hard, versatile Linux based operating system and is the most admired free software distribution. Recently, openSUSE developers released the distro’s most modern 10.3 for GNOME and KDE environments. The current release comes with two live CDs and an install-only DVD. openSUSE 10.3 also offers an extra CD that includes Real Player, Opera Web browser and Acrobat PDF Reader. The live versions are carbon copies of install-only CDs and except few oddity, they seem set to rub out the older versions shortly.

openSUSE does not in reality alter the partitions, but it could baffle new users into configuring the incorrect partition, particularly if they don’t understand Linux partition numbering. Partitioning plays a vital role in installing a distro and hence care should be taken to avoid bugs during the installation.

The main disparity in the installation process between the install-only CDs and the live CDs is the competence to include more online software repositories. If the developers can append the online repository install trait for the period of installation from the live CDs and sort out the boot loader bugs, the installable live CDs will be great descendant to the install-only CDs.

What has always positioned openSUSE apart is the appraisal of administration homogeneity that the distribution carries to this assorted set of gears – mostly during its gigantic system configuration framework. To conclude, we can appreciate the go-getting span of openSUSE 10.3’s configuration gears, but we may have to face some quarters in which it exasperatingly surpassed its grasp.

Selecting The Correct Domain Name Can Make Or Break Your Site

Posted in Domains by admin on December 26th, 2007

The increased competition on the internet has given people a vast array of choice and also put the emphasis on site owners to ensure that their business is as visible as possible. So what are the best ways to make your site visible in a second?

There are many ways to do this such as advertising on third party sites, adding content and joining one of the better business directory sites online but one of the easiest and often cheaper ways is to actually pick a domain name which says what you do. If you were looking for a marketing site which of these domains would appeal most to you at first sight :-

Everythingforyou.com

Or

InternetMarketing.com

easy, InternetMarketing.com.

The domain name says what you do and within a split second of actually seeing the name you have a rough idea about what is on offer and what you should expect.

While there is no doubt that brand names sell well, if they are well known, they can take many years to build up and cost a fortune to promote. You need to ensure that your site becomes closely associated with a particular activity or business, such as ebay.com and online auctions but can you wait that long?

Selecting a Domain Name may actually be one of the more important factors which will affect the strength of your site in the early days. It is vital that you research what is out there, your competitors and take the time to pick the correct name for you.

Surfers have become lazy over the last few years and unless they are hit with the correct information in a split second there is every chance that they will just move on to a competitor. Your domain name can be your best asset to attract customers and don’t forget that you won’t get a second chance to make a first impression!

Linux Mint 3.1 – anticipate development in future releases

Posted in News, Product Review by admin on December 25th, 2007

Linux Mint 3.1 is an offshoot distribution of Ubuntu developed to provide easy GNU/Linux desktop distribution. But, the very purpose for which it is developed is not met as it has quite a few shortcomings.  Linux Mint comes with two editions – one main and another light edition. The main edition comprises of plugins and proprietary codecs whereas the lighter edition includes does not have these features. Both these versions is developed with GNOME as user interface. Some other versions with different interfaces like Xfce and KDE is also available in the Mint series.

Linux Mint3.1 has codename ‘Celena’ and contains a different theme that includes a splash, GNOME Display Manager, GTK themes and modified boot. The default theme layout of Linux Mint contains a single panel contrasting Ubuntu and other GNOME distributions as they have two panels. MintUpdate another software update tool is also included in the Mint3.1 package. Earlier versions of Mint contain KDE and Xfce interface, which is entirely different from the current 3.1 version. So, if you want to employ some other desktop environment, then you have to choose the older version.

After the installation, when you boot the machine you will come to see the Linux Mint Assistant Menu which provides with the option of running with the root account to run administrative commands. Also, you have to select the default program to switch to NTFS/FAT drives. The Assistant menu can be made more useful if it can facilitate the Nvidia driver as Mint already by default facilitates other sorts of proprietary content.

Puppy Linux 3.00 – bigger and better!

Posted in Product Review by admin on December 25th, 2007

With landfills teeming with superfluous computers, Puppy Linux is giving life to old and outdated hardware. When we see Puppy Linux from a compatibility viewpoint, it has elegant features that accrue resources without reducing the number of applications.

Linux developers have offered a viable solution through Puppy Linux and with the recent Puppy 3.00 release they have enhanced its features and efficacy. With Puppy 3.00, you can browse the Internet and also spreadsheets and reports can be easily done. You can also monitor firewalls and can organize network devices with Puppy 3.00. Every application available in Slackware 12’s repository could be installed with the help of Puppy 3.00.

Though Puppy 3.00 is filled with new exciting features, the major drawback is that during shutdown you will be given only one chance to save the files. If you imagine that the distro will save the whole thing on some partition and forget to mount it, then you will lose all the data when you shut down. With the file save wizard at shutdown, Puppy 3.00 can help its users to save the data even when it is not mounted.

On the other hand, Puppy Linux is an implausible distro as it can bring life to PC’s with less than 100MB ISO. Puppy 3.00 comes with an application for each task and you can do everything that you do with an advanced PC. Barry Kauler, Puppy’s main developer boasts that Puppy 3.00 has the capacity to install Slackware packages as it has all the basic libraries such as Glibc 2.5, GTK 2.10.13 and GCC 4.1.2 from Slackware 12. Puppy 3.00 also has newly rewritten custom boot, shutdown scripts and configuration for better performance.

Get a 2000$ Laptop for 400$!

Posted in News by admin on December 25th, 2007

The ASUS, the Taiwanese tech heavyweight is very well known here for desktop components like motherboard and various other components, has introduced a laptop worth $400 with much of the capabilities of a $2,000 Fujitsu or Sony subnotebook; the usability and convenience that are missing from the club members of Intel’s Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC); and the wackiest name of the year.
The Eee PC has its name framed from “easy to play, easy to work, easy to learn”; you can even enjoy the motto of the Asus “Rock Solid, Heart Touching” — is a traveling companion weighing a two-pound for anyone who’d want the productivity of the basic office and WiFi e-mail and Web in a system that is slightly larger than a three DVD case stack (about 1.4 by 9 by 6.5 inches).
Can it really be compared to the status-symbol—“slimline” notebook?  Inspite of an 12 or 11-inch LCD, the Asus has brought a little bitsy display of 7-inches. If you lie to have a DVD or a CD drive, you need to plug in to an external USB model.
And instead of a huge hard disk that takes a lot of space, this has no hard disk present at all — the 4G is the name for its 4GB flash memory (solid-state) drive, of which only 1.4GB is available after the Asus installs 40 various applications incluing the operating system. To have an extra storage, you nee to plug an SD/MMC card into a flash drive or a slot into the USB port.
The reasons for the Eee to be sensational are very simple: Other notebooks are easy to carry cost much more than $400. And various other notebooks which cost $400 weigh much more than two pounds.

The SD/MMC card slot is present on the right side of the Eee’s right side, adjacent to the two USB 2.0 ports and the VGA port — connects an analog monitor, and lets you to see the presentation on both the screens or on either of the screens, with the external resolution to 1,600 x 1,200. Another USB port is present on the left, as are Ethernet, headphone and microphone jacks (and a port regarding a dial-up modem  left empty in the configuration of 4G).
It’s just a snap to join the wireless network using the Atheros 802.11b/g adapter of the system, but the other two wireless pathways are absent — it would have been marvelous if the Eee had 3G wireless broadband to surf when there isn’t any hotspot at sight or at least the Bluetooth. Asus says that it’ll consider the issue with few add-on cards that are scheduled to ship in conjunction with the accessories such as spare packs of batteries in the next year.
The Intel Celeron M 353 processor of Eee— was evidently chosen for its economica thermal design for 5-watt power in spite of its screaming speed. But the flash memory disk helps the Asus to feel peppy enough while switching among or loading programs; the huge bulky OpenOffice.org gets loaded within 15 seconds. Nobody’s going to manipulate the high-definiton video on the Eee, but each and everyday the applications tend to feel perfectly responsive.

Battle Tanks – a cool game to idle away!

Posted in News, Product Review by admin on December 24th, 2007

Battle Tanks is a vintage style game in which you will drive a tank and lift up weapons to blow up enemies. The official website of the game only provides the Windows installer and the source code of Battle Tank. So, the packaged version of the game can be availed from PackMan repository by SUSE and openSUSE users and for Ubuntu users, the package is available at GetDeb Web site. Battle Tanks is an addictive computer game as it features graphics with capably drawn maps, and tanks, and other vehicles.

The multicolored graphics and the trouble-free usage make the game more alluring and the weapons accessible with the game make it more interesting. When you are beginning the game, a start window with three subsections appears. In the first section, you will get a choice for different scenarios and once you select the scenario, the respective map comes into the screen with a brief description. If you click on the map, you will get a larger version of the scenario. From the next Players section, you can choose the number of players and the weapons they require. You can select a maximum of four players and can play the game on your own or against someone else by selecting the split screen option.

If we look at the disadvantages of the game, it lacks a fitting manual and small number of traits that needs some development. Occasionally it takes numerous attempts to lift up weapons and in a few cases it is not viable to embark a new tank. But the utter fun and brilliant graphics make Battle Tanks a game to try when you get bored of outdoor activities.
