SWsoft Virtuozzo for Linux 3

Posted in Product Review by admin on December 23rd, 2007

SWsoft Virtuozzo for Linux 3 is an efficient and flexible server system for environments for Linux Productions. Virtuozzo allows you to run various servers that are virtual on an individual host system. Already, the Linux users have the choice of User Mode in VMware, Xen or Linux’s Server software. These systems employ an approach of a virtual machine, creating the environment that camouflages the guest operating system that it is being run on the actual hardware. Using the VMware Server, for instance, it’s accomplishable to operate Windows 2000 Server on a system running Linux. This featured adaptability comes at a cost, and the processing components of offering a virtual machine are such a way that a system can run out of the box when various systems that are virtual are running at the same time. Virtuozzo uses an entirely different approach, making some copies that are virtual of the software as well as OS, and thus using these virtual copies to create Virtual Private Servers (VPSes). Since there aren’t any overheads of the virtual machine, the hardware can assist even more servers that are virtual before the processing power runs out.

Virtuozzo uses a template system to configure and create the VPS and the associated applications of it. Templates assure an OS or application will only make a copy in memory and one copy on disk for the entire VPSes that may use them. This minimizes the utilization of resources and lets much higher number of servers that are virtual to run. Every VPS runs with their own IP address and offers a total working environment that supports services and users and operates in the similar way as any other Linux system. Application software may also be installed into the unique VPS in the same fashion as you would do on a normal server. But the application requires a copy in memory and a copy on disk for every VPS that uses it. It will not be shared between multiple servers.

There exists a couple of management interfaces on offer. The Virtuozzo Management Console that runs on Windows provides control over all the monitoring, system setup and management features. It’s utilized to gain access to the VPS systems and all other host systems running on them. Using this software, you can create a number of virtual servers, manage VPS groups and upload templates with a few clicks of the mouse. The Virtuozzo Power Panel software (VZPP) that is browser-based provides access to the routine monitoring and maintenance tasks, such as recreating, restoring and creating any VPS. VZPP can be run on browsers such as Mozill Firefox browsers or Internet Explorer, and is used to monitor and manage an individual VPS by utilizing its unique IP address. Since each and every VPS contains its own set of groups and users, each one could be allotted to a different management if needed. The secure shell facilitation provides access to a command line for full control of the VPS.

This software may reallocate the resources to meet the changing loads. Unique VPSes can be designed to control end-of-year or end-of-month scenarios, or even other unusual or infrequent situations. Each one can then be preserved until needed, saving resources and time. But, all the servers should be running the same operating systems. The Linux host can only assist the virtual servers that run Linux. But this isn’t any problem for producing environments, where the requirement is to run systems that are stable, on various servers and control large volumes of traffic with several mixes and workloads. In such types of scenarios, Virtuozzo plays the job well.

Windows Vista now turning several heads from XP SP3

Posted in News, Product Review by admin on December 23rd, 2007

Windows Vista now turning several heads from XP SP3, and the Leopard from Apple exhibiting inconsistent security, individuals and companies ask themselves well whether this is the season of desktop Linux.

The reason for running the Linux on the mainstream desktops is release of the three of its leading-edge most popular perating systems based on Linux—Fedora 8, Ubuntu 7.10 and OpenSUSE 10.3 at fall. This is stronger than ever. Nevertheless, a lot of integration work needs to be done.

All the three releases are short-span, fast-moving operating systems based on Linux. This is the package tht is available at its best in the open-source software.

Each of them can function excellently as a desktop operating system intended for general purpose, provided that the maintainers or users of these operating systems should be prepared to upgrade the operating systems about once a year, and to have the capability of sorting out the compatibility issues of the hardware that may find their existence during upgrade/install time.

For enterprises that are interested in piloting or deploying the Linux desktops, and that need a even more maintenance, support and stable path, these three releases are still worth well for evaluation: Each of it offers a look at the limitations—and capabilities—found in the longer-lived, forthcoming “organization” embodiments of SUSE, Red Hat and Ubuntu Linux.
Cost/Getting It

Fedora 8, OpenSUSE 10.3 an Ubuntu 7.10—each are available in PowerPC, x86 and x86-64 versions.

All the three Linux OSes are absolutely free to redistribute and free to download as well.
On the positive prospective, the all-free nature of Fedora, OpenSUSE and Ubuntu makes these operating systems very easy to possess, and lets for a wide network of mirrors from which to get the software packages and disc images.

On the negative part, the all-free nature of these three Linux operating systems means leaving off any software units those are not similarly distributable again. For example, the Flash Player of Adobe, Runtime Environment of Sun’s Java and a mixture of multimedia codecs and hardware drivers must be possessed through separate repositories of software repositories.
Of the three versions, Ubuntu does the ideal job of access to those components that aren’t free, sarting with a software repository that is officially “restricted”.

With OpenSUSE 10.3 and Fedora8, vendor-hosted or community-hosted or repositories to download the software to sought out and download, though both the distributions are found the individuals left hunting for instructions to finish several configuration tasks.
However, Fedora and OpenSUSE—both have made their pace towards bridging the gap between non-fre/free divisions of software. Quite a number of repositories of open-source projects for OpenSUSE—including the sites for possessing test and official GNOME, KDE, Mozilla and OpenOffice.org binaries—are made hosted via a build service of OpenSUSE. With this service, the programmers or developers can make an advantage of build resources provided by Novell to create the packages that are designed for distributions such as OpenSource.

Beyond the distribution of each version’s improvements regarding the enhanced access to software units that cannot be housed on their install media, the upgraded versions of Fedora, OpenSource and Ubuntu each boasts of the advances made in the tools for updating, removing and adding the software packages.

Use TED for unlimited entertainment

Posted in Product Review by admin on December 14th, 2007

The new way to download TV shows from the web is made possible with TED. TED is the acronym of Torrent Episode Downloader, a cross platform tool that makes your search for torrent files easier.

TED is geared en route for regaining periodic television shows; it allows you to hunt for exact episodes by term and episode number. TED does its probing in the milieu, and if you constantly fail to see a show, you can still have TED replicate its searches on a customary basis, without intrusion from you.

With a catalog of predefined shows and a manually chosen set of feeds from many torrent sites, you have a wide range of choice to choose from. TED is a tiny Java application and you can get the most recent build from the project’s site. When you have got TED, just unzip and extract it and begin the app with java –jar/ted.jar.

When you launch TED for the first time, it will routinely open the preference window so that you can organize some fundamental settings. Normally the preferences window comes with four tabs: General, Advanced, Look and feel and Software Updates. You can also allow TED to launch your default Bit Torrent client to switch freshly found torrents. But this trait is not yet executed in Linux; however on a Windows or a Mac box you should know that automatically unlocking every torrent could drench your bandwidth.

Downloading and finding your favorite episode is always troublesome, but when you use TED you will feel happy that it is doing all the things without interrupting your busy schedule.

Damn Small Linux – tiny application for better performance

Posted in Product Review by admin on December 14th, 2007

DSL – ‘Damn Small Linux’ is a miniature Linux distribution that was created by John Andrews to find out how many applications can be fitted into a 50MB system. DSL offers a remarkable compilation of options for managing the distribution.

You can boot it like a live CD from a USB or else on a hard drive. It can even run on old CPUs like 486DX with a tiny 16MB RAM. If you install DSL on your hard drive, then you can also promote it to a complete Debian system.

Frequent releases of DSL are made to enhance its features. The new DSL 4.0 has brought so many changes and updates, but still it is treated as a unique function distribution for older hardware as it does not support a lot of contemporary features.

DSL comprises a few tiny functions to get you started. In the graphics menu you can see xpaint, xzgv and xzoom. Stag Spreadsheet, MS Word Viewer, a calculator, a calendar Ted Word Processor are the things you can see beneath the Office menu. DSL also offers bigger applications in Universal Compressed ISO set-up. There are plenty of additional applications programmed for installation in the DSL’s software installer.

Multimedia, themes, games and net are some of the categories available with DSL. But, there are many more applications offered with DSL and hence it is amazing that it presents a lot in such an undersized package. Conversely, as old-fashioned hardware is constantly being replaced by new hardware, DSL may have to strive hard to exist in this modern world.
