Linux Mint 3.1 – anticipate development in future releases

Posted in News, Product Review by admin on December 25th, 2007

Linux Mint 3.1 is an offshoot distribution of Ubuntu developed to provide easy GNU/Linux desktop distribution. But, the very purpose for which it is developed is not met as it has quite a few shortcomings.  Linux Mint comes with two editions – one main and another light edition. The main edition comprises of plugins and proprietary codecs whereas the lighter edition includes does not have these features. Both these versions is developed with GNOME as user interface. Some other versions with different interfaces like Xfce and KDE is also available in the Mint series.

Linux Mint3.1 has codename ‘Celena’ and contains a different theme that includes a splash, GNOME Display Manager, GTK themes and modified boot. The default theme layout of Linux Mint contains a single panel contrasting Ubuntu and other GNOME distributions as they have two panels. MintUpdate another software update tool is also included in the Mint3.1 package. Earlier versions of Mint contain KDE and Xfce interface, which is entirely different from the current 3.1 version. So, if you want to employ some other desktop environment, then you have to choose the older version.

After the installation, when you boot the machine you will come to see the Linux Mint Assistant Menu which provides with the option of running with the root account to run administrative commands. Also, you have to select the default program to switch to NTFS/FAT drives. The Assistant menu can be made more useful if it can facilitate the Nvidia driver as Mint already by default facilitates other sorts of proprietary content.
